How Do You Know It Is Time to Replace Your Water Heater?
Water leak around the unit : If there is a pool water around your hot water tank as a result of a water leak, it is time to replace it.
Water quality: sediment or rust is a sign that internal parts could be damaged.
Temperature issues: Lower water temperature and not enough hot water is a sign your water heater is about to give up.
Odor from running water: If the water coming out of your faucet and fixtures has a rotten egg smell, it is a sign that your water heater needs to be replaced.
Noise: If your water tank becomes noisy it is usually a result of sediment build-up inside your water heater and that it is in its last legs.
Shelf life – Hot water tanks are designed to last an average of 8 to 12 years. If it reaches that age and you see any of the above signs, it is time replace the unit.
Newer hot water heaters are better designed to last a little longer than older hot water heaters, However, regular maintenance is required to prolong their shelf life. With regular inspection, draining, and flushing, you can expect a gas water heater heater to last anywhere from 8-12 years and an electric water heater to last anywhere between 10 to 15 years.
